About
Newcomers to open source rarely fail for lack of technical skill. They fail because the path in is undocumented, the tooling is unfamiliar, the first build breaks, and nobody answers. Most give up before their first merged pull request.
OSS-Doorway turns that path into something a course can actually teach. Students work inside a real project — not a sandbox — while the environment scaffolds each step: finding a suitable issue, setting up locally, asking a question that gets answered, opening a pull request that a maintainer will accept.
What we are studying
- Which barriers actually stop students, measured rather than assumed
- Whether gamified scaffolding shortens time-to-first-contribution
- What happens after the course ends: who keeps contributing, and why
- How to design this so maintainers gain help rather than review burden
Approach
The work runs as design-based research across several semesters at NAU and partner institutions, pairing the learning environment with interviews and repository-mining studies of how the students' contributions land in the projects they touch.
